Architecture

Large work, light website.

The two things an atelier's website has to reconcile pull in opposite directions: large images and a page that opens quickly.

The tension

Three things that get in each other's way.

  1. The photograph is the argument

On an atelier's page the image does the work that text does elsewhere. Compressing it until it looks dirty throws the argument away.

  2. The work grows every year

A site designed for twelve projects stops working at forty. Ordering and filtering are decided on day one, not in year five.

  3. Not everything belongs in it

A complete archive is one thing; a portfolio is another. Choosing what stays out is part of the work, and it is done with the atelier.

What we do to the images

Four steps, always the same.

  1. 01

    Resize.

Each photograph is produced at several sizes, one per class of screen.

  2. 02

    Convert.

Modern formats with an older fallback, so no browser is left out.

  3. 03

    Defer.

Only the first image loads immediately; the rest arrive as they come near.

  4. 04

    Measure.

Before delivery and again after, on the phone and the network a visitor actually has.

What we build

An architecture studio.

A project index, a method, an enquiry form.
